You don't have to do the quest if you don't want to. Get a rope and go to the house at the top of the falls, go out the West door and board a raft. The raft will take you to the first island in the river, then it will break.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Once you're on the first island, turn your orientation (use your left and right arrow keys) so that the S on your mini-map is at the top, and the N is at the bottom.
