Yes, use melee protect, his firebreath is mage-based, but its mostly negated by anti-dragonfire shield.

The traditional and most used way to kill Elvarg is to melee it with a dragonfire shield (VERY IMPORTANT). Protect from melee will of course help alot but it's not needed
