January 11, 200818 yr iron bars for sure, you can get tons of xp more with the same cash you need to train with steel bars (adding the gp you get from alching the plates)
January 11, 200818 yr Iron or steel is usually the generally accepted training for smithing. I got lvl 53 on mostly just steel soon as I could make it.
