Java version problem in Kubuntu Hardy Heron

I'm running Kubuntu Linux Hardy Heron, version 8.04. On Firefox, version 2.0.0.10, after I did a big system upgrade (which is probably irreversible, unfortunately), I got a bug I'd had before, but don't remember how I got rid of: If Java 5 plugin files AND Java 6 plugin files are installed to Firefox, then neither version works.

The problem is that if I uninstall version 6, then version 5 causes the problem anyway, because for some reason, it includes every version of the JRE from version 1.1 to 1.5_blah, or something like that. If I uninstall version 5, then version 5 stays on my computer, locked inside version 6 somewhere.

My about:plugins page is as follows (right now,I have only version 6 installed, supposedly):

Shockwave Flash

File name: libflashplayer.so

Shockwave Flash 9.0 r48

MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled

application/x-shockwave-flash Shockwave Flash swf Yes

application/futuresplash FutureSplash Player spl Yes

Java Plug-in 1.6.0_03-b05

File name: libjavaplugin_oji.so

Java Plug-in 1.6.0_03

MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled

application/x-java-vm Java Yes

application/x-java-applet Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.1 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.1.1 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.1.2 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.1.3 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.2 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.2.1 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.2.2 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.3 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.3.1 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.4 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.4.1 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.4.2 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.5 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.6 Java Yes

application/x-java-applet;jpi-version=1.6.0_03 Java Yes

application/x-java-bean Java Yes

....

There's more to that giant Java table, but it's all the same as the first half: just replace "applet" with "bean". Also, the "Suffixes" column is blank. The Yes is under enabled, and the Java is under Description.

Anybody know what's wrong?

Thanks.

I can't tell you exactly what the issue is, but it could be that you're using a beta release of this OS.

Perhaps a complete removal/reinstallation of all java packages is in order.
