Thank you to tripsis for an awesome sig!

Do you have an AGP, PCI or PCI-E slot?

  • Author

The laptop that i wish to play on already has a sort of intergrated graphics card/chip on the motherboard which i cannot seem to remove or replace... so i guess it's impossible to put a new one in? Can't really give you any more details on that really! It is 64mb, but am unsure if it is 3D.... After some fiddling about with the computer i figured it is a mobility radeon 9000, but after google searches i'm still not sure whether it is 3d or not? How can i tell? I used something called belarc, plus all of my knowledge (which isn't much as i say...)

However i have a desktop computer that i share, that has a PCI - E slot... (as i have just discovered)

I also have other games that i cannot install for one reason or another, so i think it's time to buy a new one for this aswell.

So... What would be the best graphics card for my PCI - E slot on that computer?

And i suppose it's impossible to get a new graphics thing for the motherboard on the laptop since i might have to replace the motherboard and it wont fit? So maybe i need to think about buying a new laptop?... Unless there are any other ways you know of?

Sorry if i'm being vague, or talking a load of nonsense - it's just i've always been bought up with somebody else doing all this stuff for me - so i've never really learnt!

Ask me some more stuff if you need to know, and i'll let you know as soon as i can (that's if i can!) Also, i wont be able to log on till tomorrow.

Thank you for your time!

All graphics cards today are 3D ones, the only 2D ones I remember were WAAY back in the olden days.

Yours should be able to handle runescape's load with their 'new' graphics.

You are correct that you can not replace the video card in a laptop.

What kind of games are you playing? It may be that there is simply no reason to spend money on a graphics card if all you are going to do is play runescape.

However if you are playing some more demanding games post your specs on the desktop you wish to upgrade and how much you'd be willing to spend on a video card.

The cards I would recommend are:

For low games, like Half life 1 / CS 1.6 or even playing source games on decent settings I would recommend a 6600GT. Really cheap.

For a bit more mid priced option I would recommend a 7900GS. This should be good for most modern games as long as you have a decent processor/RAM although it'll play new games probably on low/medium details.

For some heavier gaming, considering you have the rest of a rig to run it, I would recommend a 9600GT. Quite cheap and mine allows me to run Age of Conan (one of the most demanding games on a GPU right now IMO) on all highs.

The reason why I skip the 8800GT is I can't really justify spending another $40-50 on what is a small FPS boost (like 3 fps maybe).

Of course all of this depends on what your doing and what your PC is like. If you're running an ancient AMD 64 processor or a pentium 4 or something like that a 9600GT would be a waste.

ps: I am only speaking from a Nvida point of view, as I have owned all these cards in the past and they have served me very well. Hell, my little brothers machine (my old PC) could run Call of Duty 4 with a damn 6600GT in it. . However there are good ATI alternatives, and some may argue that in the lower range an ATI alternative may be better. However for the higher range (like 9600GT/8800GT level) I prefer Nvida.
