Huge problem, attack of the bsod

Hello, I am currently running windows xp service pack 2 and I am running into a problem. Whenever I start the computer and try to start it in any mods, such as safe mode or normally or last settings that worked, I get a blue screen of death.(my computer was also custom made)

 

 

 

The bsod reads:" A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent further damage to your computer.

 

 

 

If this is your first time you've seen this stop error screen,restart your computer.If this screen appears again,follow these steps:

 

 

 

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus,disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run Chkdsk/f to check for hardware corruption, then re start your computer.

I tried butting in the xp recovery disc but it gets to starting windows and I get that blue screen, help!

It's a problem with your harddrive.

EDIT: Ah, didn't read carefully enough that you couldn't boot up.

Solution 1

 

Insert your Windows XP CD and get into Console Recovery. Run Chkdsk.

 

Please read the tutorial called Console Recovery for a detail explanation of what it can do for you.

 

 

 

Solution 2 (This may seem long winded but it could help you.)

 

If you do not have the Windows XP discs then:

 

Make sure everything is switched off. Your computer system switched off. Physically take out your hard disk that has Windows XP installed on it and attach it to a second desktop (make sure it is a slave by altering the jumper settings in the back. Look at the hard disks instructions on how to do this.)If you don't have a second desktop take it to a friend who has a desktop and attach it to theirs.When you have attached it, then run Chkdsk on that drive. Use these commands.

 

Chkdsk /p (performs an exhaustive check of the drive and corrects any errors.) /r (Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.)

 

 

 

Example: chkdsk c: /p /r

 

The C: is the C drive that Windows XP is installed on.[/hide]

 

 

 

If you can get into your system then get into a DOS prompt and run the same chkdsk command.

I have the windows xp recovery disk but every time I put it in it goes to a blue screen after setup of the drivers, I do not think that from my current position I can do anything that you have suggested, the only options I can get are in the bios, is this what you mean?

 

 

 

I would not want to risk removing the hard drive, should I just return it to the shop?

ok,that doesnt work I press r and nothing happens it is an xp recovery cd, I think it has to load it first, which it won't. Itll just go to a blue screen

How old is your hard drive, and what size/make is it?

 

 

 

If its old it may have bad sectors which are causing an error when windows attempts to write/read this sector.
