System Volume Information

I'm sort of curious, my hard drive is getting sort of full because its only a 40GB and am looking for an easy way to make some space. I know the system volume information folder holds system restore points incase I had computer problems or something and wanted to restore my computer to an earlier state. So if I wanted, is it ok to delete some of the contents of this folder? Its taking up nearly 6GB and seems like an easy way to gain some room on my hard drive...I just dont know if its safe to do.

Any feedback would be appriciated, thanks.

Go to start >> programs >> accessories >> system tools>> disc cleanup.

Wait for it to analyze what you can clean(might take a while), then click the tab to "find other wayts to clean up your computer" or whatever the hell it says.

There should be an option like "delete all of my restore points accept for the most recent"

So in other words it will delete them all accept for the newest one, you will still have that one if you mess up your computer. It might take a while to delete 6 gigs but it is worth it. Also note that doing this doesnt disable system restore, nor would you want to, it just gets rid of all the old junk you no longer need.

THEN run the disd cleanup thing and compress old files, delete temporary files, internet files, ect.

My guess it you will be able to free up close to 8 Gigs if this is the first time running this.

When your done with that I suggest you go to "add / remove programs" and get rid of ANYTHING you don't use, as it is just wasting space.

Once this is all said and done, go to start >> programs >> accessories >> system tools >> Disc defragmentation

Run disc defrag on your computer, this sorts out files that have been misplaced or moved around. Not only cant this potentially free up some room, but it will help your Harddrive find/seek stuff faster.

For instance, if you have a big game on your computer like halo or halfelife or something... when you play the game, it will start certain files so you can play the game, but when you end the game... not all the files you were using go back in the right spot and when you want to play again it takes longer for it to find where it put those files.

That is just a rundown on it in lamens terms, if you didn't understand it don't worry because that is the best I could do lol...

So to summerize:

Run disc cleanup

Delete all but most recent restore points

Remove any programs you don't use by using add/remove programs wizard

Run disc Defrag
