Flying

Recommended Posts

I have always wanted to get a pilot's license, but a) I wouldn't know where to go, when to start, (As in, can I do it right after I leave the school I'm in now, when I'm 16 or do I have to go somewhere else first?) and B) Nobody takes me seriously when I say I want to be a pilot. It's not like I'm a 5 year old saying "I want to be a firefighter" one day, "I want to be a policeman" the next, and "I want to be a pilot" the next, repeat.

Any advice, people?

Get a flight sim and start learning. When I first met my instructor, he was doubtful too, but once I started talking flying stuff with him (navigation, radios, rules, etc.) I gained a lot of respect very quickly. You just have to show that you're serious and want to learn.

I'd love to fly as a pilot but unfortunately one drunken night I took a small amount of LSD (a half tab) so I can't now as the PCP will show up in my system. :|

It exits your system almost entirely in about 1-2 months, if I remember correctly. Wait 3, and get a haircut. That should be about enough to do good.

Lol, not true. There is no plane that can do the whole maneuver itself, including radio transmissions and making decisions only a pilot could make (such as is x cloud is safe to fly through). I do believe, however, that Airbus has been working on a Fly-by-wire system for quite some time now, and that will essentially preform a full ILS landing at a properly equipped airport.

Not sure about radio stuff, but planes can definitely auto-land and take-off nowadays. I was on a week long aerospace course earlier this summer and one of the guys running it was an ex-commercial pilot who used to fly for Airbus, we had a lecture on fly-by-wire technology and how they can land themselves nowadays (the guy had done about 6 himself).

I've done quite a bit of flying for one reason or another. I was in the CCF RAF section at school for about 4 years and we used to go up flying a few times each year in a smallish single prop plane. The pilot would talk you through the basics, even got to do some aerobatics towards the end. And on this course I did some more flying, helicopters as well as smaller planes. Not something i'll probably ever do again though, just doesn't quite appeal to me.

What I've been told by numerous amounts of Pilots my parents know is that the LSD doesn't remain in your system, but the main hallucinogenic property, the PCP does, which is what potentially causes flash backs.

god dangit I wanna :twss: :twss: anyone know a free civilian airplane simulator on the internet?

It isn't? Myth Busters were wrong then. :?

Nah, they just exaggerated. Most of the flight can be autopiloted. Landing and taking off isn't as difficult as it was in the past, either.

Take-off and langing's pretty hard- As far as I know, there is'nt yet a plane that can take off/land with an autopilot. however, when it's gotten to around it's cruising altitute, the pilots can turn on autopilot and do whatever they want till its time for landing or there's something that needs to be done.

the concorde went really fast (mach 2.2) because of secreal factors, one of them beng how aerodynamic itwas. modern civilian planes could easily go faster by making them more aerodynamic, also, but I wonder why peole don't do it...

X-Plane has a free demo.

As said earlier, there is a plane developed by Airbus that can land/takeoff without input from a pilot. Also, you'd be surprised how little pilots are actually flying the plane- it's usually about the first 2-5 mins and the last 3-5 mins, depending on the airport.

The Concorde went fast because of it's engines mostly- they were many times more powerful than the ones on your general passenger plane. The engines also used many, many times more fuel than a normal engine.

If you see me that way, sure. But really, I just enjoy flight and therefore know some things about it...... just like others who know lots about things they enjoy.

Take off is easy, full throttle, keep the nose down the centre line and rotate (pull up) at take off speed, its the landing that's hard.

Each take-off is optional, but every landing is mandatory.

We are along way from taking humans out the loop, rail transport will be first to automate and I think Air will be amongst the last to fully automate.

Now now, we don't always go at full throttle at takeoff... of course that depends on how you define "full throttle"... In a jet (and some props) you can actually go over 100% throttle and go usually up to 110%. Of course, pilots will only use 110% in emergencies, as it places to much stress on the engines to be used repeatedly and/or often.
