September 13, 200817 yr Okay, so, I have a computer which has Vista Pre-installed on 'Local disc (C:)" and I want to install XP. I have to disk to install it. It worked on a Virtual machine, but when I went to install it on mine, it said can't use this disk or something like that. I heard you can only do it on a Partition with the drive letter (D:) Which is my recovery partition. I don't want to touch this partition. I have partitioned my hard drive with a 30 GB partition as the picture below: So, as you can see, I want to install XP on The (Y:) partition, but it won't let me, and if I hit enter to try and install it on (C:) During setup, I get the [bleep]ing'ing Blue Screen of Death! I got it 4 tims already... So, hopefully someone has had this problem, or knows how to help.
September 13, 200817 yr Just wondering, why do you want to install XP? Besides that, the first rule of installing multiple MS operating systems is "Always install the older operating system first!". If you try to install the newer one then later the older one, you will usually have all sorts of problems.

I'd like to 'side grade' to XP. My computer came pre-installed with uh.. Vista.. Lol. Then I want to try to install XP to a designated partition but I have my recovery as (D:)
September 13, 200817 yr I don't know if this is right, or if this might screw you up, so don't try without someone else confirming I'm thinking you make your disk drive (E: I presume, as it's your dvd drive) as your bootable drive through BIOS. Put in your XP disk in your dvd drive, then restart computer. It'll have the XP disk as the boot up drive, which I'm guessing will let you have the option of installing XP. Choose the Y: drive, then install. AGAIN, PLEASE DON'T TRY THIS WITHOUT SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING CONFORIM THIS, AS I PROBABLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. Yup tried it, then I go to install it on a partition and it says no disk in the drive. Then I go to hit enter to try and install it.. And I get 24 inches of pure blue and white. (BSoD).
September 13, 200817 yr Author Could install a boot loader and install it on another partition. Ok, I heard of a boot loader but, I'm not exactly sure what to do with it. Can maybe someone tell me what to do and tel me a link to one? I had one, but forgot the name.

September 13, 200817 yr Author Ok, actually, I have another spare hard drive, I just need to buy the red jumper cable to connect it to the motherboard. So say I format it on another computer and then connect it and place it in my tower, will I be able to install it on there? Because, I don't get any option to install it on a partition at the moment..

Yea you can still use a boot loader with 2 drives and have an OS on one drive and another OS on the other and it will still boot them.
