Do you control the use of charges on your DFS or does it automatically go?

i think whenever you click Operate it uses a charge

Also, you can recharge it as a dragon breathes into your shield when you have less than 50 charges. For each charge, you also get an additional defense bonus stat (+1) in all melee and ranged combat.
