dymed
Yesterday I was just browsing these forums on my laptop when all of a sudden the internet stopped connecting. I went onto my desktop and the internet was working just fine. My laptop is connected through a Netgear router. The laptop has "wireless technology built in" (as in it automatically searches for wireless networks in range and when it finds one, it asks to connect to it and shows a list of available wireless networks in range). However, yesterday it suddenly disconnected from my router and when I manually searched for wireless networks in range, it said none could be found. I unplugged all the wires from my cable modem to the router and all the wires from the router to my desktop and the power source to the router. Plugged them all back after a few minutes, didn't fix the problem. I then tried to let Windows "fix" my inernet connection, but it just went back to saying "No wireless networks found in range." The laptop is running Windows XP Home and I'm using a Netgear router that hasn't given me any problems before. I did a Norton virus scan today, nothing found. What I'm going to do tomorrow is take my laptop to the local library and see if it connects to their wireless network (like it did a few months ago when I took it there). If it does, I'm guessing it's a problem in my own house, with my router or something. If it doesn't, I'm guessing it's an internal problem in the laptop. Anyone know what might be wrong or have any ideas on how to fix it? I'll post my results from the library tomorrow after I come back home. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I really need to get the internet back on this laptop as soon as possible. Thank you.
kingjoe2002
put the laptop right next to the router and see if u get connection. If not something is wrong with ur router. If yes the channel u were using probably has interferance. I had a similar problem where my wireless connection just stopped working all of a sudden. I was on channel 11, try either 1 or 6 cuz the others wont make much difference. I went with 6 and my internet worked fine again.

I did put the laptop right next to the route to make sure it wasn't some weird interference thing. Still didn't detect a wireless a wireless network. :? But still, I'd like to know what these channels you speak of are, and how do I check which one I'm on and change it? Time for me to go to work now, so on my way back I'll stop at the library and check it out. Thanks.
kingjoe2002
well if its right next to the router and it still doesn work then switching the channel wont help. Try to use another wireless adapter and see if it connects. If not its your router. Flip the router upside down and stick a pin where it says reset. Then power cycle you cable modem and reconnect your router. If a different adapter works then uninstall the adapter u had before and reinstall it. Make sure you turn Windows Firewall off. also u can try to uninstall the TCP/IP protocol and reinstalling it.
