Your "shading" is just some form of cell shading, and almost reminds me of Van Gogh's work as he did pieces with his work where you could almost see a light coming out of the character. Then again his works are way better then this. When it comes to pixel art, this shading will not cut it. Also you must think Van Gogh didn't have to use a computer to achieve great art.
