Couple of Vista Errors

Hey everybody!

Recently (1-2 weeks ago) I've been getting 2 consistent errors that pop-up at specific times. Here they are:

1. At Start up - I get 3 consecutive errors telling me that 3 specific .dll files are missing (one error for each .dll file). I don't know what these .dll files do and where they belong but I don't know how to replace them.

2. Everytime I open my downloads folder I get a error from Windows Vista that says COM Surrogate has stopped working and the problem was caused by DivX. I haven't tried uninstalling and re-installing DivX yet but I can try.

If anyone knows what the heck is going on here please post. It's annoying getting random error messages. Other than that my laptop runs fine.

Cheers

Can you tell us what the DLL files are?

Regarding the download folder, Vista will interogate all the files in the folder and try and create thumbnails, and I bet you that you have a Video in there which is DivX encoded, you can do one of three things:

1. Delete the video.

2. view the folder in details mode.

3. download and install the k-Lite codec pack which will have the divx codec with it.

I would say clear out your temp folder, as it doesn't do much really, and that's where all your problems are. Plus, I can't find a mention of those dlls anywhere. Download Crap Cleaner and run it, see if it can delete the problems.

Then again, I could be wrong and your computer doesn't work as a result of you cleaning out the crap that has likely amassed as a result of normal computer usage and poorly written code on Microsoft's part. But I doubt it.

So you sucker punched a kid in the back of the head? Good job.
What scares me is that you're like 10 years old.

You were a couple years ago.
It's not racist if its true.
Hmm... I wonder how one goes about throwing someone out a window in a mystic fashion :-k

The mental image for that is freaking awesome.

some program that is launching on startup requires those DLL's, I don't recognise any of those DLL's.

First off I would un-install any programs you do not require, it's possible one of them is trying to auto run, and failing. Seeing as it's failed you obviously don't use it, so un-install anything you don't need.

Secondly you could use MSCONFIG and selectively un-select startup programs and reboot, keep doing this until you find the one that's causing the error, you can then remove that program once you have found out the offending one.

How would I personally go about doing this? I would check the startup folder and the two run sections in the registry, trying to launch everything I find there, One of them would cause this error and I would remove that entry.
