Proxy Servers

Forgive me if i've made a mistake here, but I've picked up from all the tech talk I vaguely understand, you can bypass a various internet blockers (for example websense which is completely over the top) with a proxy server.

So erm...how?

If i've made a mistake here, please correct me so I know a bit more about the difficult bits of PCs.

Thanks :)

In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application program) that services the requests of its clients by forwarding requests to other servers.

A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource, available from a different server.

The proxy server provides the resource by connecting to the specified server and requesting the service on behalf of the client.

A proxy server may optionally alter the client's request or the server's response, and sometimes it may serve the request without contacting the specified server. In this case, it would 'cache' the first request to the remote server, so it could save the information for later, and make everything as fast as possible.

Basically a sytem or program that basically requests webpages for you from another server and then shows you.

You connect with one of numerous proxy server websites, the proxy server requests the page for you from the server. Then sends the page back to you, which is about it. Although big files dont really work like flash and stuff I think.

Plus im pretty sure were not meant to discuss link to sites maybe only the meathod and theory.

You could in theory, but whether or not it could be discussed here is another matter entirely. It's much better to negotiate with the person who set up the filter in the first place than to try and bypass it.

What do you need to proxy around? If you need to use a proxy, you have come to the wrong place, because you're trying to get around blocks that have been put in place by a higher authority, which Tip.It does not condone.

If you think a website shouldn't be blocked, talk to the network admin(s) and if you have a good enough reason, they will unblock the website. That's what I did, saved a lot of time and trouble. Proxies are often means for revocation of computer privileges (like in school), or a good way to get arrested (many proxies are really zombie computers that have become part of a botnet, which makes them illegal to access).

Try talking to whoever put the filter in place (for me, it was the deans, who in turn contacted the county office, who I later had to contact), and see if you can't get it worked out.
