Question about eBay and hardware.

Featured Replies

Hi.

I've never been a big fan of trading used stuff on the internet (i might go to a record-dealer that sells used cd's, but that's about it).

I know hardware isn't maybe the best thing to buy from such a bidding site, seeing as it could be non-working when it arrives.. damaged during shipping... etc etc.

My current cash situation doesn't allow me to spend more than about 80 euros (shipping included) (being a student is fun), i saw a 4670 (new) for 70eu on a hardware-store in my country a couple of weeks ago, but now that i got the money it's gone up to about 90eu.

I've seen a couple of 8800gt's for my price range - example: http://global.ebay.com/Nvidia_GeForce_8 ... 62324/item

I've always been sceptical towards these bidding sites as the seller could sell a damaged part or not even send it at all.

If anyone has any experience with buying used hardware from such a site, please tell me what your experience is.

It seems pretty safe to buy from someone who has been registred for a long time with postive feedback, but i'd just like to know your experiences.

Thanks.

Do they sell that kind of stuff on Amazon? In my experience it seems at least that it's more trustworthy, with trusted powersellers (With over like 1.5 million ratings) being quite common... If you look on amazon.co.uk and find something, you could also find shipping to Sweden faster, easier, or less expensive too.

Yeah, i checked Amazon in the beginning of autumn... But it was hard to find anyone that shipped to Sweden. But good thing you reminded me of that site, i'll check again!

Thanks!

As you said, with computer parts it can be hit or miss. Because a fried piece of electronics gear can be physically indistinguishable from a good part, it can be dangerous to buy on an auction site, and it's not uncommon to see people selling parts that they overclocked incorrectly and fried in an attempt to get at least some money out of it (screwing the customer). If you go with a seller that has a lot of good feedback it may be worth a look, but generally auction sites are to be avoided when buying computer gear.

Hm, i found some very nice prices... 8800gts (512) for 100$, 8800gs for 50£, 3870 for 75 on Amazon, but neither ships to Sweden lol. I checked on german amazon, but i didn't find much in my price range.

Bah.

I might as well keep to money for some extra pocket money for my trip to Germany in 10 days lol.

I'll wait and see if i find some deals, otherwise i guess i'll go with a 4670.
