We British people also tell the time by saying "it's half eight", meaning "half past eight" - I am told that Americans find this humourous.

I lost 2 points on an essay for my English class for saying that To Kill a Mockingbird was one of the masterpieces of the English literature. I should have said English-language literature, because English lit=British lit, and the novel is an American one. Funny, because the class is called Honors English when all we read is American literature...

 

Your honors class is about the English language and usually in books and literature English = Britain. Its cruel i know.

I go to an International school. We have a similar "problem" here: students from Taiwan are used to the use of Traditional Chinese while the school, being in Beijing, teaches Simplified Chinese. Our English classes also have people from European countries and America and so have people using British and American English. Being an International school, it doesn't really matter what type the students use as long as the teachers stay with the curriculum (American English, Simplified Chinese).

I read a lot of American books and such, but my school English teachers did penalize on any American spellings, so I've always used British ones. I never usually notice spelling differences anyway, and imo as long as your consistent, neither method of spelling is better.

My dad is English, so my friends tell me he has an accent, and uses funny words. I don't notice- but I wish I had one (Girls <3 accent). But I do prefer to use "s" instead of "z" in things like "realize" (although the FireFox spellchecker corrects me). I also tend to use 2 "l" in things like "travelling."

 

 

 

If you're going to be in America, you have to speak our language! ...which is English...

Ive never gotten penelized, but i have confused alot of people by useing the english words. My family is from england but i've lived in america so it gets really confusing.
