What's going on with my ClearType?

ClearType is turned ON, notice the choppy edge on big text and the smooth edge on small text.

ClearType is turned OFF, the large text is no longer choppy but the small text is.

I'm running Windows XP and I have an HP LCD screen. I've tried changing the settings using the power toy, in vain. Is there an alternative to ClearType available that won't have such a strong effect on large fonts, or something I might have missed in the settings? Thanks. :)

This choppiness is caused by aliasing, it doesn't 'smooth' the text out, so it appears pixelated. Anti-aliasing is the 'smoothing' of the text. I'm not sure how cleartype works, but look for an anti-aliasing option, it should fix it.

Well, here's the deal: Normal antialiasing is done pixel by pixel. Cleartype antialiasing is done subpixel by subpixel (one RGB stripe at a time). That gives you a smooth edge with small text, but it's ugly on larger text....
