I think I did something bad...

Featured Replies

A few days ago I was working when I got an evil blue screen, saying that it had stopped to protect my computer.

However, now when I try to standby/Hibernate my Windows XP computer, it get stuck on the screen that matches the Log-on Screen, and will stay like that until I forcekill the power. Restarting and shutting down works fine however. Does anyone have a clue what I did and how to potentially reverse it?

Thanks in advance

I've gotten the Blue Screen of Death before with the message that it happened because it was trying to save my computer as well. I just restarted and it appeared to work fine. I'm still able to stand by and hibernate.

I'm not quite sure if the Blue Screen of Death directly caused your inability to stand by or hibernate - if it gets stuck at the "Logging Off" screen, it means that there was some problem writing the temporary image of your workspace before shutting down (which is what hibernation is supposed to do).

I don't have any guaranteed solutions on how to reverse it, but I guess you could try a System Restore to a previous date before you got your Blue Screen of Death. If that doesn't work, I guess you could Google around for an answer, otherwise, if you REALLY want to use stand by or hibernate, you might have to resort to a System Recovery.

I know that's not that helpful, but it was the best I can do with the information I have now.

Imho, System Restore. Do you know what caused your blue screen anyway?

If you get a bluescreen again, get the error code, that helps a lot, we can determine what went wrong.
