Hello. The bestiary states that the dark beasts will only use magic when attacked. I just attacked one about 15 minutes ago with protest from magic prayer on. It tried to use magic which was blocked. It then proceeded to hit the crap out of me with melee. So it still uses melee when attacked.

The original notes on the Dark Beast weren't very clear, I've changed it :)

 

Dark Beasts will use the magic attack if you are far away where they can't reach you. They'll stick with melee if you are within range.
