Boot problems - somewhat urgent

About 2 weeks ago, I decided to defragment, because my computer was booting rather slowly. I restarted after that, and my computer seemed to be booting much more quickly, but it ended up not booting at all. I tried a system restore and now it will boot sometimes, but it's just as slow as it was before I defragmented, if not slower.

When I try to boot:

It does the xp boot screen, then where the login should come up, I just get black, no cursor, nothing.

Though once in a while the login screen does show up, but it takes rather a long time... or at least longer than it should.

I can boot into safe mode always, though.

I looked through eventviewer and couldn't find anything that was obviously my problem.

Any ideas?

If you press CTRL+ALT+DEL two or three times while waiting for the login screen, does it bring up the manual login prompt? If so post up a HiJackThis log while in normal windows. Might be something in there.

If not, how easy is it for you to do a format. :P
