blade995
Well I have been curious for some time about using linux. Mostly Knoppix, because nothing has to be installed and can boot from a cd. Plus when i want to use windows or don't like it I can simply remove the cd. Well I have a few questions before I go and try this. I know you can put this program on a cd and dvd but which would be better for speed, booting ect? I am not as "all kowing" of a computer like you guys but is there anymore skill to use? I have read the FAQ on thier site, but it doesn't say how big the program is. So can it even fit on a normal 700mb cd? Uhh any tips or suggestions about this? vronin
knoppix is a live CD linux (only 1 CD), but you could also install a linux distribution on your hdd with lilo (this requires a linux partition ext2 or ext3...), and when you boot your pc you get to choose to start windows or linux. i have mandravia (mandrake) 10.2 and windows on my pc
Hannibal
You download a .iso file, so a cd image, if you download knoppix. This will fit comfortably on a 700Mb cd, if all goes well. Any good cd-burning program will support burning such a cd (Nero, Roxio, whatever). Specialist knowledge... well, using Linux may be somewhat of a change at first. If you want to use the commandline (I think you should, but I can't make you ;) ), you would definitely be helped by some tutorials, but those should be easy to find on the web :). Apart from that, Knoppix has alternatives for a lot of programs you're used to. I'm pretty sure the newest version has Firefox, as well as Konqueror (also a browser), and Thunderbird and several other programs for Email. It will also have some development tools (KDevelop, Emacs and Vi editors), and it has OpenOffice.org (comparable to MS Office). It shouldn't be a real problem to use, provided you don't grow all scared when your desktop doesn't look the way you're used to ;).
blade995
Thanks hannibal that gave me some more insight on the program :D . Well you said it fits good on a 700mb cd, but the downloads I'm getting are 3.09gb of data. I downloaded the huge file over night. I don't mind putting it on a dvd, I have plenty. I am using bitorrent to download the file. Well I put it to a dvd using nero. I went into my bios and changed the boot sequence to boot from the cd drive first. Well it's still loading windows. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I have a cd drive and a dvd/cd burning drive. My normal cd drive can not read dvds. In the bios it just said cd-rom drive it didn't say a drive letter. So would it read both cd-rom drive for the disk? I don't know what I'm doing wrong :? . Please help. Hannibal
Did you burn the file to a DVD as a file? The point of an image is that it's an exact replica of the filesystem of a finished DVD / CD. Nero has a special option to burn using an image... problem is, I don't use nero so I wouldn't know where it's located. The normal Knoppix CD should still fit on a cd, so be around 700MB. I think you may have downloaded an extended version or something like that ;). A direct link to one of the mirrors: ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/dist/knoppix/K ... -27-EN.iso Before you burn this to the cd, use an md5 program to check whether the file is intact. Saves you the time to burn it, test it and trying to figure out why it doesn't work. As you can see here (ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/dist/knoppix/), the actual file is about 700MB as well :) Maybe this mirror is slow for you, then pick another one here
blade995
Ok, I have been downloading 4.0 which is like 3.09gb. The 3.9 like you said is about 700mb. I downloaded the 3.9, burned to a cd. So I load it up, it's loading, then it said something like this. A:/ I think I need a camand line to start it? Uhh where can I find that? Or is that not the exact file? I'll try that program to check if it's idenical. On nero there's an option to burn a bootable disk, thats what i'm using. I'll look for the burn using an image thing.
