Learning How To Upload Images

First off, I'd like to apologize if this is against the rules or I missed a sticky.

Now, I'd like everyone to understand that I have been a frequent user of computers as well as the internet for most of my life. However, in that time, I've never actually learned how to save/upload and post images on any forums without tinkering around with the pictures for awhile.

The time has come for me to learn how to do this since I can't expect everyone else to do my uploading for the rest of my life ::' .

So, how do I save images, what should I save them to, where should I upload them, how do I know a good size to upload them into, what link should I copy to post the pictures under, and how can I do this in a quick and neat way without spending all day on it?

Thanks for your help :) !

For future reference: Questions go in the sticky: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=690610

You can use a variety of image hosting services:

http://www.imageshack.us

http://www.tinypic.com

http://www.photobucket.com

PhotoBucket requires registration, ImageShack requests it, and TinyPic doesn't.

For this example, I'm going to use TinyPic and upload a random avatar of mine. Where you save it doesn't matter, as long as it's accessible on your local hard drive (or flash drive). If it's an avatar, I recommend saving it as a highly compressed .png (I know only how to do this in GIMP, in Paint it doesn't compress the file) Sigs you should probably save as high quality .jpg. (again I only know how to do this in GIMP. Paint is crap when it comes to technical stuff) Other random images should probably be .png if quality matters, .jpg if size matters. You should only use .gif if you are animating something.

(I was editing my post because I figured it'd be locked. anyway I'll continue)

So you go to tinypic, find where you saved the image, and upload it:

[hide=Upload Image]16gzw2x.jpg[/hide]

(for some strange reason, tinypic opens new tabs in firefox)

If you're using the image on forums, you should pick the 'for forums/message boards' as it already has image tags attached.

IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards

2m48u3d.png

HTML For Websites - has a link back to TP and the img src tag for html to display the pic.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

On TIF it doesn't display.

URL for E-Mail & IM - Link to the image page on TP.

On TIF it appears as a link, if you click on it you're taken to the TP page where it is displayed.

Direct Link for Layouts - Direct link to where the image is hosted

On TIF it appears as a link, if you click on it you're taken to the image in the browser. You could copy this code and place it inside tags and it would appear the same as the first one in this list.
