I'm lvl 50 farming but I've really only dealt with planting herbs not so much allotments, my question is do they constantly need to be watered for them to keep growing? I've always done it but have never known if it was required for a successful harvest.

Watering can only help, but it is never necessary. I am 92 farming currently and the last time I watered a plant was when I was level 17, or so, excluding watering seedlings in plant pots.

Watering makes the plants grow faster and be stronger against disease, much like compost. Also like compost, you have grow them just fine without watering.

I generally do not water plants because it is a waste of time, imo, and the difference isn't very big

At the only doing herbs bit:

Doing trees and allotments (pay farmers) will help get your farming up faster. Especially fruit trees and higher level trees are good experience.

I usually only water crops I don't pay for to protect, but only right after planting (flower patches for example).
