The guide didn't seem to mention anything about "saving" the gnome you agree to rescue. I believe you must talk to the head mourner after completing the puzzles in the elven cave, but before completing the quest in Lleyta.

 

It's not necessary to complete the quest, but perhaps it would be something to include in the Tips and Hints (Extras) section at the bottom.
