Can't detect external HDD after hibernate

I hope someone can help me..Whenever I go into hibernation, and resume from it, I can't detect my external hard drive at all. It doesn't show up in device manager or anything. The only way to get it to show up again is to un- and re-plug it back in.

Is there any way to get around this?
