Just a poem by me

For my English class I had to write a poem, and I thought it might be decent enough to share it. It's a Petrachan sonnet, although I didn't incorporate any meter or feet (I know most are in Iambic Pentameter, but it's not like I have all day to sit around and mess with it). Basically for those that don't know, an Italian sonnet is 14 lines, with an octave and a sestet. The octave introduces a problem, while the sestet some sort of resolution. I also tried to incorporate literary devices such as alliteration, metaphor, oxymoron, and some others that escape me right now.

The poem assignment was to describe past memories. I had chosen to describe the first time I saw the cherry blossom trees bloom where I live (Which was several years ago). Of course that's only the literal meaning of the poem. Being a sonnet, a Petrachan one as well, there are hidden connotations. Poetry is sure a great way to let it out in a productive way wouldn't you say so?

As for the title, I wasn't really sure what to call it. I thought it was appropriate though, since the poem is about the past.

I'm not really looking for critique, I just wanted to share it with people. If I made you think about the poem beyond the literal level, then I think I've done my job as a poet. Enjoy.

Distant Years

Under the impression that the world was nothing but gloom

Never in my life had I witnessed this sight

Radiant yellow center that was bright as penetrating light

Even my melancholy subsides while witnessing the cherry blossom bloom

Quickly the pale pink petals pierce my heart

Up in the sky the merciless wind blows them away

In this cold, warming day in May

The moment seemed to last forever, yet in the end I had to part

Every night since that fateful day

Dreaming to escape the reality of this bane

Lost I had become, for I was too late

Oblivious I had been, if only I could return to that perfect moment in May

Voices tell me that they will bloom again

Even so, my first shall forever be my fate
