In the TTN it says that AFTER the quest you can unblock the cave, get herbs, fix bridges and fire up the fireplace.

 

However you can do all that during the quest, as soon as you can get to those locations. This would be particularly useful information for those who do not want to/can not finish the rest of the quest, but want the rewards either way.
