My First Build - Ordering Tomorrow

Featured Replies

Newegg bundle

Ive been looking to get a new computer for a couple years now. I had originally planned to build the computer, but my source of funding (aka mother) didn't like the idea. Today I was on Newegg.ca and saw this bundle for under $1400, which appears to be better than the $1700 computers from Future Shop and Best Buy. It would give me experience in putting together a computer, without the worry of the parts not matching. The only thing that seemed questionable is the 650w PSU, but that can always be cheaply replaced in the future.

Any feedback/opinions?

Expensive.

Even tho your mother doesn't like it, tho if you are 15+ you could probably argue why, and if you need i7-sort of build, i'll make a list tomorrow. 650w is easily enough, people think their stuff use 5billion watts and go out and buy ridicolous high wattage psu's.

I figured it would be easier to talk her into it if it came as a set. I thought it was a reasonable deal for an i7 build. I plan to use it for Photoshop and gaming on max settings, so I'm not sure if the GPUs are strong enough.

Every time I try to plan my own computer, I end up over $2000. My budget is $1600 before tax/shipping.

Yes, i understand what you mean.

But you get more for your (her) money by building it yourself (you know how to, i assume).

This build will be a little bit less costly, but i didn't react to the price itself from that combo deal - it was what you got for it. The following packs a bigger punch:

I'd also like to point out that, the motherboard is SLI/CF compatible. But if you plan on doing that, you'll need to change the psu. Say, if so.

Obviously you could also save money by choosing another case, such as the Antec 300, again, tell if you'd like it cheaper.

Antec 900 - 120

Liteon cd/dvd read/write - 20

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB - 100

Intel Core i7-930 2.8GHz - 304

SeaSonic 620W Modular - 93

GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 - 230

EVGA GeForce GTX 460 Superclocked - 248

G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1333 - 155

=1270

GELID Solutions Tranquillo CC cooler - 49

Noctua NH-U12DX 1366 120mm SSO CPU Cooler - 80

I recommend you to choose one of these cooler and ditch the original Intel. If you plan on overclocking, i recommend Noctua. Otherwise Gelid.

Questions, ask.

I like it. I might go with SLI, which would put the price closer to $1600. What PSU would you go with for that?

And no, I don't plan on overclocking, at least not to start.

Ive never worked with windows 7 before, would you recommend Home Premium of Professional?

Professional is always the best choice imo. You get more than Home premium for less than Ultimate, and you might need to use the XP mode if you have very old programs.

Home premium. For the normal user, WinXP mode is the most interesting thing with professional.

CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W, non modular - 140

CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-850HX 850W, modular - 180

Up to you what you prefer. For a build at this cost, i would personally go for a modular, but that's me. (nothing different otherwise between them)

E: Without sounding like an arse, having seen some of your posts, i hope you understand how powerful this build will be. Even if you go with the single graphics card.

Bit of a necro, but Im ordering this tomorrow and I wanted someone to look over it. Here is my likely final build. The prices in red are part of a combo, which gives me a $120 discount.

LG DVD Burner - 19.99

I also need thermal compound. I was going to just get arctic silver, but there were a lot of comments about it not being the best. Any suggestions?
