Why won't my laptop read my CDs?

A week ago, I bought an album. It has 2 disks in it, one's a bonus, and only now did I get around to transferring it onto my iPod.

However, I have no idea why my laptop won't open it. I put the CD into the laptop. then open E drive and a popup says "Please insert a disk into drive E" and a hyperlink that says "Help me choose a disk" (but that doesn't help, I tried).

Any reason why this happens? Also it happened with some other disks lately and this laptop is a HP Pavillion dv6000, and it's like 3 years old

Yea, the drive is a DVD drive as well.

Also sometimes other disks work, although it's pretty random.

If different disks work basically randomly, there is a chance that the drive is broken - the lasers tend to get knocked off their optimal positioning, damaging disk read performance. Try holding the laptop at different angles as it reads disks and see what happens - sometimes that will help to realign the laser.

I'm blaming the motherboard. I've had three laptops all the same model (HP Pavilion dv6000) with motherboard failures as it's a common thing for it.

Chances are it is just the DVD drive like Snipersas said, but I personally would prepare for the worst, I just dont trust that particular model.
