defence levels: protection against magic?

Does an increased defence level (defence pots for instance) work to avoid magic defence? Might sound a dumb question but I never experienced much difference when fighting

magic defence (levels, not stats from equipment/armour) = 70% magic level 30% defence level

(is there any source for those numbers? Not that I don't believe you but I find the issue quite interesting)
