Xbox Error Code 73

Featured Replies

Yo. So I'm really not a computer/console game kinda guy. Now that I quit RS I just don't play them altogether. However, I've been waiting so long for Force Unleashed 2... Yea. (btw. don't buy it. It's got like 4 locations. I beat it in like 4.5 hours for $70? Boooo. Graphics are epic though.)

Anyways, so I went to turn it on to rebeat kamino (:D ) before I started my philosophy paper, I turn on the xbox and on the bottom right corner of the ring is ra-ra-ra red.Now my brother whose a total xbox nerd (no offence to anyone here) always raves about how it's the death of all the world when it appears. It says error code 73, and contact MS support. Now I've googled this for like 10 minutes +, and the only issue is they all say different. Some say there's no help, pay $150 and send it to MS and wait 2 months. Or, unscrew the "heatsink" screws, reconfigure the ethernet port, unplug and replug the av cords. etc. etc. Anyone have any viable advice, from either personal experience, or google was nice to you?

Thank you much, I'll just do my philosophy paper now. >.>

I have all the 99s, and have been playing since 2001. Comped 4/30/15

Lemme Goo..........

Sorry I can't help you on that error code but how old is the XBOX? I think you can get it repaired for free if its 3 years or under warranty (extended from a previous 2 years). They sorted my son's XBOX even without the reciept as we'd lost it and tbh it was more like 2 weeks than 2 months.

Edit: Misread E73 as E74.

I would give microsoft a call to see what they say first.

From what I can remember, I think it's the E74 error that is covered under the extended 3-year warranty, E73 appears to be less of a worry!

If you're still under your warranty, your best bet is to go through the Microsoft Support channels. You should be able to find a support link under the Xbox website relatively easily. If I remember right you'll simply need to provide a few details that you can find on the console itself and a blurb about the problem - I found they got back to me pretty quickly.

If it is going to require a send-out to them, they should provide you with a courier pick-up free of charge too! :)

The biggest thing to do right now is at least attempt the Microsoft Support path, especially prior to attempting to do anything yourself to fix it.

@Guydabest,

I performed the X-Clamp fix on my previously dead console that Microsoft refused to fix after it failed from their first repair - it definitely solved the problem and wasn't too much work either, so it's certainly an option! You do need to be pretty careful though as a single-slip can ruin your console, and make sure you find some quality parts.

However, having said that - you need to make sure it's the right fault that you're attempting to fix. E73 is (apparently) an ethernet issue, I don't see the X-Clamp fix doing anything for that. Best bet at the moment is attempting to see if Microsoft can offer any advice initially.

Oh, I misread and saw E74 instead of E73. Thanks for pointing that out :)

If its not under warranty open it up and fix it like the people show you on youtube. Thats what i did. If you [bleep] it up then go buy a new xbox 360 they got a new model out that looks cool.

Un-fortunately your system does not qualify for the three year red ring coverage as you have the wrong red ring of death (you have hardware failure as opposed to general hardware failure):

a period of one year (three years for conditions that cause three lights on the ring of light on the front of the Console to flash red)

so the first question is :

Did you purchase the unit within the last year?

Yes: Send it in for repair under warranty

Did you purchase it with a credit card?

Yes: check the terms of the credit card used as some offer automatic extended warranties on purchases

if no then you can pick between your choices:

only one of these two can be chosen:

repair it yourself

Send it in for repair

and only one of these two can be chosen:

Purchase a used console (you dont need a hard drive, as yours should still work)

Buy a new console( again you don't need a hard drive, I suggest waiting for awhile to see if they come out with a new holiday bundle)
