I got monkeys as a slayer task, and I know there's some to kill in ardougne zoo.

However I went and there is no visible way for me to kill them.

He even advises me to travel to Ardougne!, so there must be a way, but how?

Range/mage them. Use low level bolts because unless you want to telegrab them, they're not coming back without ava's device And even if you really don't want the range/mage xp, you can take a boat to karamja for only 30 gp in the southeast corner of ardounge, on the docks.
