RealTek bull [cabbage]

I really don't understand this program. My headphones broke in one ear today, I normally use them at night plugged into the line-in on my USB speaker/iPod dock set, and all works fine. So i took my Turtle Beach X1's from my xbox 360 and plugged them into the correct ports in the back of my PC. Ok, all's good. I get a pop-up from RealTek asking me what the things are I just plugged in, I chose Headphones and Mic respectively. No sound. I uninstalled the dumb program and then my PC didn't even realise the headset was plugged in. Unplugged it all and put it back in, RealTek is automatically reinstalled, and the headset shows up in the volume control with iTunes & system sounds both on full blast, yet I can only hear system sounds. Seriously how can I get rid of all this garbage and just have my PC work normally and play through stuff when it's plugged in without any hassel?
