Can't burn CDs

Peter

Recommended Posts

Lately my computer is giving me trouble burning CDs of any kind, be it music or data. In iTunes (the most convenient burner I have), I put a blank disk in and click burn and the CD drive opens as if it wants me to put in a blank disk. I tried using another burning program I have, and it's the same problem. At some point it would burn maybe the first three or four tracks then the rest would be bad. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, I have Windows Media Player. It says to insert a blank disk in the drive. Is it possible that the drive isn't registering? It shows up in My Computer as being the CD-RW Drive, but doesn't register what is in it.

alright Mr.Peter let me see if i can help you, Now you can't burn CD, Now your CD burner is it a recent Version, and does it Register with Itunes, and this other program? second, another problem might be with the connection to it, i kind of had the sane problem, but your going to need to open your chassi up and check. (Sorry this is basically what i deal with everyday, so i'm trying to see if i can help you by going through the Guess and Check Method, since i'm not physically there i don't know of much that i can do sorry), Next open Device manager and make sure it's there, if it's burning 4 or 5 tracks and then stopping, my best advice to you is to just go buy a new one if all else fails... God this reminds me of my good old floppy drive in 87 in my basement lol

Hope this helps

Sincerely

The drive is like the one which originally came with the computer, so hardware speaking it's up to date, but it's firmware might need to be updated. I tried doing this but had a problem before it could even start with it.

It doesn't register when I put an audio CD in iTunes or Windows Media Player, however it appears in My Computer. When an audio CD is in the drive and I want to explore the drive, it's as if there's nothing on the disk. It does appear in the Device Manager and it says that the drive is working properly.

I would go buy a new one, but in an attempt to fix the problem the first time around, I switched the drive with a slightly newer drive with equal function from another computer in the house. It worked when it was on that computer, and the drive that I put in that computer (the one I was first having problems with) now works in that computer, but the drive that was originally in that computer (the one that I'm having trouble with) isn't working now.

I will confirm a good connection when I turn this off for the night, but from the other symptoms I suspect the problems are different.

Thanks a lot for the help.

The same thing happens to me with XP fairly often.

If you're running XP then boot from the Windows CD, go into the Recovery Console and enter the command 'chkdsk /r'

Let that complete, reboot and you'll probably find the writer works OK.

It wasn't a rootkit apparently.

I tried doing the chkdsk fix, and it went through a series of checks or fixes, but the drive still doesn't work and has the same problems as stated above. Is it possible, when the console asked which Windows directory to look in (I had no idea, I just entered 1 and something happened :P), that I should have entered something else?

Thanks again :).
