Short story help

Featured Replies

I want to write something, but i need examples of how the dialogue must be between character a, b and c. I need many forms (if there are many approaches) of how to approach a dialogue between two or more characters in other words?

I hope you understand what i mean. :shades:

P.S If you got links to Short stories writing in general i would appreciate it I F the link provided has plenty of examples.

I don't have a link but you should check out FanFiction its a website devoted to amateurs writing their own versions of popular stories from tv and novels. Some of it is very, very good and shows excellent examples of short story writing - some of it is terrible, there was one particular Harry Potter one that gained noteriety for being the TROLLiest most awful story ever. It was however hilarious so to slightly hijack if any knows the one I'm talking about could you drop a link.

Few rules of dialogue

1) You not need to use he said, she said, bob said too much. With more than two people it can be needed sparingly, but each character should have unique enough pattern of speech to be distinguishable by the reader without any ques.

2) Give character's unique voices; do not use all perfect grammar or all real words. Just like real people they need their quirks, abnormalities and traits in speech.

3) If you dialogue is short, concise and too the point it is usually rubbish. Go tape record real conversations they meander and wander; convincing dialogue should do the same.

To cover my ass rules wise VIEW LINKS AT OWN DISCRETION. The stories to contain illusions to/direct reference to sexual content/themes.

In terms of links my old blog:

Has two stories I wrote last year for university that contain a fair amount of dialogue (Unknown Desires and Forever You) The desires one is more reported/recounted dialogue so uses more I said he said. Forever you is totally ambiguous but you should be able to clear see which person is speaking.

Also this from my new blog:

Is a good example of using irregular words etc in dialogue

I know I posted all my own stuff, don;t mean to be big headed just only examples I can link too off-hand; none of it has 3 way dialogue. But good two way dialogue is very similar too 2+ dialogue
