On the Rogue Trader blackjack guide, you should do the defensive one first. When the urchin gets away after being hit he tells you the trick is to move with the blow. After this one go and challenge the dealer to try to knock you out. This worked for me; I couldn't stand for 2 blows before I did the defensive one. After that I succeeded on the first time. This should be included in the guide.

I believe its pure luck of the draw.

As the guide states you have a chance to fail on either attempt at surviving the hit on aggressive blackjacks; it just happens to be sheer luck you survived after doing the defensive ones but not before hand.

I know I did attack ones first way back when it was released, took about 5 attempts but it worked.

There is indeed some randomness involved with this. Luck of the draw, as Sy said. It must've been a coincidence that you were able to stand the blows the first time after unlocking the defence blackjacks.
