Makoto_the_Phoenix
I don't understand the question. Why did he leave? Because he most likely realized his game was at or just past its peak in prime, and at that point he was poised to make a LOT of money. Hopefully, two things come of this:He becomes successful with his project, releasing it to indies and studios alike, and offering a competitive platform for people to develop games, andAll talk of him abandoning Jagex because he couldn't stand their direction is squashed. It's been demonstrated that making more than $75K doesn't increase one's happiness, so him making a lot of money is probably a moot point. He wanted to focus on his side project, rather than be weighed down by the mammoth project that is 'Scape, which is understandable. No someone who just leaves the ship is never a good captain. A captain is always to leave the ship as last, and be first on board: those are traits of leadership. While he's a captain of the ship, yes. But any captain is allowed to change ships (or become a farmer or whatever). Yet a captain can never leave the ship unless he knows it is in save lands, it is actually a crime if a captain leaves the ship before the others. (As seen by the ferry earlier this year in italy, where the captain left the sinking ship as first and is now in jail for leaving instead of helping). I'm also not saying that andrew should not leave RS: be my guest and leave.. But saying he deserves respect for that, and would be stupid not to leave is something I disagree with. Things that earn respect are people who devote their life for a company. Keeping a company the "family" feeling of a small company yet very influental in the world. (for example how the philips family made philips one of the largest companies between 1900 & 1980, after that it went downhill as investors came into the picture & fritz philips had to retire for old age). Software engineers are just plain wired differently than anyone else on the planet. For example: http://xkcd.com/242/ Your logic sounds sound in one sense, but is completely invalid in the dynamic world of software development. People that don't observe trends in the marketplace, and attempt to adapt to those trends, are as good as doomed. Software developers that don't experiment in different fields are doomed to both irrelevance in modern times, as well as boredom. People in general that don't try to capitalize on their own idea are only limiting themselves, and leaving themselves dissatisfied. The guy wanted to do something different, and that's definitely commendable. I can't really recall at any point in time when he handled the front-facing side of the business anyway, nor do I recall him stating that he liked doing that if he did, so accusing him of abandoning ship is pretty harsh. 1 Linux User/Enthusiast | Full-Stack Software Engineer | Stack Overflow Member | GIMP User...Alright, the Elf City update lured me back to RS over a year ago. Gemini
Metaphors are everywhere; they have flooded the thread. I hope we can stay afloat above them. If not I will have to bail. [/puns] Post of the month.
