Discreet gold sellers

Before I go on I'd like to briefly remind people that:

 

-Buying gold is against the rules and also, please don't discuss morality/etc. on this thread.

-I would strongly advise against doing so anyway and would never do it!

I've been standing in Varrock West bank in an F2P world and I've noticed things that seem a little bizarre. Earlier this evening a level 5 (the name was a standard bot-type name) said "Follow our sellers to place an order." I tried following several people standing around but no one reacted and I did not receive any private messages.

 

Later another player (around 50 combat with an untrimmed runecrafting cape) appeared to be trying to attract their attention, but there was no mention of an order.

 

In another incident a player asked a level 5 (possibly the same one) "Is this from that website?/Is this my order from [redacted]?"

 

I also tried adding the player. Although their private chat was on, they did not reply when I messaged them.

 

I haven't checked other worlds (or world 1) but something bizarre seems to be going on. Does anyone have any ideas? I'll update this if I get more information.

Wouldn't surprise me. Stealth sellers are commonly run by private god sellers, commonly (from what Ive seen) by one person who uses bots then sells it by his or herself.

 

At least that's what I've seen from a bit of research I did a year back.

I've run into very similar things over the last few months. Not uncommon at all if you know what to look for / places to look. Mod Weath and I took out a couple dozen of them a while back but since making gp with bots is so easy they just come right back.

Keep in mind how easy it is to make gp as a normal player too... I think big stakers/pkers/flowerers sell just as much as bots do and they do it without even mention money in game (irc, forums, skype, etc)

It wouldn't surprise me if they're just using a type of irc to communicate with buyers.
