when it is turned on can you turn it off? or is it a one use item? I would like to use it only when collecting from MTK, ideally and then shut it off

It has absolutely no use what so ever for MTK.

It increases nests when woodcutting.

 

On MTK the woodcutting you actually do for favour yields no returns, so no use there and when you collect you are NOT woodcutting so it doesn't apply.
