My work towards Learning the fundementals of pixel art.

Featured Replies

Well, i've set out tonight to learn how to do pixel art, the right way. As in, I know the basics, 1 px shape, all that good stuff, but how to do the "actual" stuff. AA, dithering, those things.

Anyways, i'll be posting my "progress" you could say of what i'm doing. So far I have gone through a few tutorials on http://www.spriteart.com (amazing site), so here's some stuff that set up for me creating a 'lil sprite head. (which isn't too great, but planning on giving him a body :D)

The first thing I did, Dithering. Basicly, it's using only 2 colors to effectivly show off many shades. It's deffinitly a technique i'm going to be using, as I'm trying to not use too many colors :D.

I then did this. Silly, huh? It's a circle, wow you must think. No, the reason I followed this tutorial was simple, to learn how to make effective and clean lines. To be honest, I think this one helped a lot.

I than did some tiles. Mostly for practice, incase I want to try and ISO Sprite, but also I tried out a bunch of the different dithering methods (used 2 colors, the BG one and a darker one :))

And finaly, the 'lil guy I made. Yes, the avatar is only 32x32, but I tried to make all of these as small as possible (except the tile is 64x64, so I could do more). This way I can practice putting detail into a smaller image.

Well, so far, not much, but I decided to be smart on this one. I'm not going to jump right in and try for a full sprite, nor am I just going to start with line art. When this is all finished, this sprite mostly, I will probaly work on a full signature. (he isn't realy detailed... much yet, I need to work on his shading more.)

Anyways, thought I would post this, mostly incase anyone is currious what I, as a pixel newbie, am doing to learn the process. :)

Looks like you're still practicing and figuring it out, so good luck. So far, from the head pic, the hair looks good but the face lacks some shading.

Yeah, I need all the practice I can get to be honest. On paper, I can usualy draw fine (with a reference), but when you translate that to drawing with a mouse... eek.

I'm going to try and shade the face some more in a few probaly. Think I was trying to do some dithering, but didn't locate a light point much at all. :)

May do a quick cube too, just to practice.
