Do I need to equip it in order to have the bonus yield or can I just keep it in my inventory and still get the bonus?

I think they changed it not very far long ago.

You still get the effect of them if they are in your inventory.

Having it in your inventory indeed does work (source).  It was changed a few months ago in patch notes to do so.
