Well hacking and keylogging are quite different and come from many different angles. I'll briefly try and explain :)

Keyloggers - originally designed for corporations to "keep tabs" on what their employees are doing. An Executable file must be run on the users PC to install the "server" . The server then runs silently in the backround tracking any keystrokes entered, window changes , etc.. Then a a specified amount of time (set into the server by the person doing the "tracking") A report is created then sent to the "Spy" . (usually an HTML based document sent quietly through winsock). These can be gotten from any source of file transfer, email , peer-to-peer, etc.. But the file MUST be executed on the users system before it starts its run.

Hackers on the other hand , have almost no use for client and server files. The use backdoors and security exploits found in network capable pieces of software. (Operating systems, email clients, ftp, etc..) Being "hacked" so to speak , in its true form is VERY VERY rare for the average home computer user , as you dont really have anything of value to offer the hacker. And just for the record , Hackers do so to gain knowledge , not information.

Hope that sort of clears up why you should ALWAYS keep your software up to date and ALWAYS have fulltime firewall and virus protection running while connected to the Internet :)

I like to fart silently but deadly in movie theaters

Websites on the otherhand are sitting ducks waiting for script exploiters (script kiddies) to come along.
