Overclocking a microwave

Consider this an analogy for overclocking your computer:

There is a microwave on a table in the company lunchroom. The advertisments claimed it has 10 speeds, but it really goes no higher than 7.

Most people are ok with this, they go around blissfully, having learned to adjust by putting in food for a longer amount of time.

A new guy is hired, and during his lunchbreak, he is frustrated that he should have to spend 2 more minutes microwaving his soup. He fiddles with controls, and figures out a way to turn the microwave up to 10. Unfortunately, it reverts back to 7 as soon as you're done. Nobody else really minds: It just means he'll get done sooner, and they can keep nuking their lunches the same way as before.

Another guy is hired, and he too is frustrated by the power 7 microwave. For a while he uses the 10 speed trick, but mumbles about it being a "temporary solution".

Finally, he goes out and gets a bunch of tools. He spends the next day tearing the microwave apart, adding gizmos, fans, and soldering a bunch of new circuits. After spending more than $100 on parts (and $5 on band-aids) he reassembles the microwave.

The microwave now runs at power 20! But it can't be set for anything but 20. His coworkers are frustrated, because now all their food is burnt. Funny sounds are coming from the back of the microwave, and it gets very very hot whenever someone uses it. The overclocker guy is pleased: His modifications have "brought out the full potential" of the microwave.

A week later, the microwave breaks down.

The overclocker can't fix the problem: Too many things have been destroyed. The microwave has to be thrown away. His coworkers are extremely pissed now, and convince the boss to fire him on safety violations. As he leaves the building, he mutters something about obsolete technology, and how "it was bound to happen".

Bonus Question!Anyone want to guess what the two errors are that mark it as fantasy?

don't post an entire story in italics, its harder to read than just plain text

besides that, nice story... i shood try overclocking my microwave

[02] -RuneScript- *** [ END ]: You gained 444,384 prayer exp in 5secs. That's 319,956,480 exp/h.

the only way to do so is to increase the power voltage and current of your magnetron, and attaching a thicker power cable, making the ability of the high current. then the microwave can be overclocked!!! YUHUU!!!

If you increase the voltage and the amount of current you fry the damn thing ;). You'd have to add stronger resistors if you wanted to increase voltage :P.

Anyway, one mistake I can spot is that electrical devices can never reach "their full potential" due to a little phenomena called "entropy" ;).

I don't think he was making fun of you, Guthix, but of himself ;)

At first, this story made me think of the dwarven stout and the like that only do a power-up for a short period of time, then drop. It made me think of runescapers who are frustrated with this temporary advantage, who end up hacking a part of runescape or just developing a super-powered potion that will let the effect last for more than just 30 seconds at a time. Unfortunately, they messed everyone else up because they cheated and had more of an opportunity to win than the others, so Jagex was displeased with them and banned them.

Also, the burnt food made me think of ranges or camp fires that work at a higher intensity and end up burning everyone's food, except for the cheaters who take advantage of it and click away early, leaving everyone upset.

Yeah, I think too much about RuneScape. Now back to mining coal..
