It's used for superheating, which isn't really necessary for smithing. Superheating gives both magic and smithing experience.

Superheating mostly.

 

High lvl smiths often superheat the bars instead of using the furnace. Almost no one smelts rune in the furnace, you can only make 3 bars per trip. I use superheat for mith and addy bars, furnace only for steel.

 

Also used for high alching products, generally steel platebodies for 1.2k each

and if you are superheating, you will not fail iron ore to bars.

I superheat all my rune ores :) Very useful spell :P
