Firefox, Linux and Runescape Music

Featured Replies

If you are a Linux user, you may have already noticed that sound effects may be working for you in firefox, but the music may not be. I had this problem too in ubuntu linux.

Here is how I got it to work:

1) Install latest Sun Java. I had blackdown java and it didn't work. I uninstalled it and installed Sun Java.

In your ~/.mozilla/plugins directory, make a symlink to the java plugin:

ln -s /usr/lib/j2re1.5-sun/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so .

Adjust the command to the proper directory were the libjavaplugin is installed.

2) Install a midi synthesizer. I chose timidity. If you choose timidity, you will have to download .pat files for it. Do a web search for "freepats". After you get it all set up, verify that you can play a midi file(download one from somewhere and type in the console: timidity file.mid. If you hear sound, it works!

3) Install the mozplugger plugin. You may or may not have to compile it from source. I got mine from the ubuntu repositories. After it is installed, close Firefox and delete your ~/.mozilla/firefox/pluginreg.dat file. It will be restored after you start Firefox again. For Ubuntu users, before you restart firefox, if you have upgraded firefox from the 1.0.8 version provided by Ubuntu, to the latest version, you must re-symlink your firefox plugins:

cd /opt/firefox/plugins/

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/* .

After that, you should have a fully working Runescape, complete with sound effects and midi music!

Thanks for that. I may give it a bash later on and see if I can get it working. Could come in handy if I ever decide to log onto Runescape. :D

Interestingly, i gave up on getting MIDIs to work on my linux box last year. after installing a "highly recommended" soundfont, I get stuff all off-key when playing MIDIs. I'm guessing that my soundfont is too detailed for my soundcard, causing it to mangle the playback (it works fine if I output the MIDI to an OGG or AIFF file. only real-time playback doesn't work)

Thank you!

Helpful but why would you want the sounds? :? The music sucks and the sounds are so bad and annoying..

That's a matter of opinion, and such an opinion can only be formed after one has heard said music & sound ;)

Intrestingly, it appears that the new RS engine uses the Java VM's own built-in MIDI engine, or an available hardware synthesiser, instead of relying on the system's default synthesiser (In my case, it's the Mac Quicktime synthesiser). while this should help make RS more "universally supported", it is interesting to note that my sound card's MIDI synthesis is awful compared to Quicktime, and I can't use SoundFonts with it. thus, when compared to the playback of MIDIs ripped from the Windows version of Runescape (jingle#.mid in the C:\WINDOWS\._file_store_32 thing), the new MIDI playback does sound "bad" and "annoying", since the quality (or lack thereof) is something I'm not used to.

(btw I'm not a fanatic or anything I have 3 computers in my home, one mac one linux one windows. I can vouch that in the end, the best RS experience is still with Sun Java on MSIE. darn.)

Dont forget java doesnt always work with firefox. I ate hell trying to find a java that worked for firefox 1.5.0.3, then I switched to 1.0.8 and java 1.4

anyway, now I'm back, without sound (exept effects)

Opera had less problems.. but then I didnt tweak it

On what OS? That's certainly not a Firefox problem, as I've been using the most recent version of Java with the most recent version of Firefox on Windows XP since before Firefox 1.0.

I've been using numerous java versions with Windows XP/Ubuntu/Mandrake and Firefox 1.0.3-1.5.0.4 over the past two years or so, and I have yet to find a combination of the above that didn't work.
