The art of Dueling+Melee Combat System

Featured Replies

As many of you are well aware, the duel arena has become ever popular in recent times as more and more players ditch their mains and start a-fresh in an effort to create an ultra effecient stake machine. Most of the time, the thought process behind it revolves around a little bit of fun, or maybe the hope of a large amount of wealth.

But my reason behind this post is not to outline what you all already know. I am here to question the formula Jagex has created behind the duel arena and the combat system (melee specifically).

A long lasting string of nothing but bad luck in the arena got me asking several question that nobody could answer.

Is the result of the fight decided as soon as you press the 'accept' button :?:

Defence; does it reduce the number of hits you take, or the size of the damage from hits you take? Or both :?:

Attack; does it reduce the number of 0's you hit, or increase the number of max damage hits you deal? Or both :?:

My personal favourite - how much is really just luck :?:

This should not be in the help and advice board, im not asking for help, merely just giving tip.it'ers various subtopics to discuss. It will be interesting to see what people believe they understand.

The duel arena - discuss.

defense reduces damage dealt to you, not sure how bout it does

attack will let ya hit more accurately, not sure how exactly

might want to add, using the best special u can is a big deal, d-dagger's can devistate people. but baxe special can also help

First attack is very important

Your clickin skills also pretty important if your havin a open duel ((Mage,Range and mellee option))

Def and Att : Less damage plus hit more often

Strength over valued for dueling

and luck... Well this is the MOST important.. You hate to see 0-0 0-2 0-12 on your dds specials

And being smart.. learn how to stop while your down.. Don't keep double up to catch up and then find yourself cleaned out. Learn when you are beat and move on.. ((Import as welL!))

good luck... retired pure dueler

I think its an area where Jagex lets us players down, a bit like the ring of wealth situation. Nearly every member has come into contact with the ROW, and yet Jagex give us the vaguest description on how it works.

Getting rare drops, or winning at the arena, is increasingly all that some players set out to do when they log onto RS. And despite this, i'll be amazed if theres 1 tip.it'er who can claim they truly know how the combat system works.

Surely there must be lots of people who are curious into the specifics of how it works and other players opinions on it.

Im not 100% on how the combat system works, but i know how to win 90% of my duels.

Experiment with different attack styles and dont always stick with your weapon if its not hitting..

 You will eventually learn that even though statistically a whip is better if you miss 2-3 times with it often a change to a dagger will result in an immediate hit.

Its all about practice, stake enough and you learn a lot of useful tricks.

1. Depending on rules/stats/gear/skill it can be. But to say that the game has a decided winner at that point is hardly reasonable.

2. Defense lowers the chance of being hit. That's it. Otherwise anything close to your max hit would be impossible on kq, jad, or 99 def + torag's.

3. It increases the chance that your hit connects. Strength determines whether that hit is a 0 or a 30.

4. Depending on the rules/stats/gear it can be all luck, all skill, or anything in between. If you want to lower luck's impact go armorless, use charged god spells, and have movement/obstacles ON. If you want to watch a duel based solely on luck watch two 126's in full dharoks, all prays, super potted, with a full load of tunataters.

With an even playing field I would say luck is about 40% of every duel.

No - People can still eat food, accidentally have Auto-Retaliate off, ect. Combat takes place as normal there.

Defence; does it reduce the number of hits you take, or the size of the damage from hits you take? Or both

Defense only determines what Armor you can wear and how often your opponent hits. Damage is determined on your opponent's Strength level ONLY.

Attack; does it reduce the number of 0's you hit, or increase the number of max damage hits you deal? Or both

Less 0s, not more max hits
