Tree farming questions

Recommended Posts

Right, with a bit of luck and some help (thanks again kwimbob :) ) I managed to reach lv22 farming which means trees (oak ones at least), unfortunately I don't know anything about growing these (I have read the guide) so here goes:

1. Is it worth using compost on the plant pot / tree patch?

2. Does the tree grow in turns like other crops, if so how long approx are the turns?

3. Is it necessary to check the health of the tree at every turn?

Thats about it I guess. Any advice gratefully recieved :)

Thanks

1. Is it worth using compost on the plant pot / tree patch?

No. It is advisable to always pay the nearby farmer to watch your tree for you, in which case compost is irrelevant. The tree will always grow; use Tip.it's farming guide for info on what you have to pay the farmer.

2. Does the tree grow in turns like other crops, if so how long approx are the turns?

I'm not really sure how the game clocks the growth of trees - I'm guessing it's on the same cycle as flowers/allotment/herb patches, but only grows every few cycles. Regardless of how, though, all trees will take several hours to grow, the higher the tree, the longer it takes. Again, reference Tip.it's guide for growing times.

3. Is it necessary to check the health of the tree at every turn?

Nope. The option to check-health only comes up once the tree is fully grown. If you've paid the farmer to watch it, you need not come back to it until enough time has passed that the tree is fully grown. If you don't pay the farmer, you would have to check it and prune it if diseased, but since you WILL be paying the farmer, just set it and forget it

Actually for all your answers, I'm going to advise paying the farmer to watch all your trees. That's too much xp to take a chance of losing.

1. Using compost(better yet super compost) is worth it for a little extra xp, or if you're watching them yourself then super compost is a must IMO.

2. The turns are longer for trees as they have a longer time to grow (check the tip it guide or the RS knowledge base for an average amount of time for full grown trees).

3. If you're watching them yourself, then you should check at every turn. I don't know the amount of time for each trees turn, but someone else might if you decide to watch them.

If Jagex ever made a perfect update, there would be players complaining about nothing to complain about.

Ok cool. I thought you lost the xp for checking health if you paid the farmer

I guess this is the only way to do it because everything keeps growing if you log off doesn't it? I always end up with dead stuff when I log back on lol.

Thanks very much folks

EDIT: per Jake this information no longer applies - Darn! See his post below.

Um, one more tip.

When growing Willow trees, the stage right BEFORE it finishes growing is the opportunity to prune Willow branches, which can be woven into baskets. The weaving is a crafting thing, and gets some xp, but of course the baskets are worthless and can be dropped.

Dunno if this still applies, but when they first began the farming skill, you got valuable xp when you pruned the Willow. I deliberately planted mine in Falador park to be close to a bank, and I pruned like 327 branches (obviously quite a few loads of 27!) before it grew to the next stage.

Keep in mind that I had to mind the tree personally (I checked it every few hours), because if you pay the farmer to watch something, you are no longer allowed to maintain in (water, prune, etc.) ... Again, dunno how much of this is till true.

it's a lot easier to get over yourself when you look at intelligence the same way you look at beauty, or height, or eye color: being smart is easy, but being good is hard ... being smart is handed to you, being good is handed to *nobody*.

Actually Pokemama, they took out that nice bit of xp. You can also prune willows after they are full grown, but no extra xp, and you still get branches to weave.

If Jagex ever made a perfect update, there would be players complaining about nothing to complain about.
