Question about MS Config

Featured Replies

What programs are required to be booted with xp? I want nothing to be booted with xp for a fast startup.

Edit: anther question- how fast will you disk get defragmented if you are using your computer for a few hours a day?

There's no simple answer to either of those questions. Whilst there are some default windows things that have to be loaded at startup, there are other things that you might need which aren't standard windows components such as driver programs, antivirus programs and so on.

As for fragmentation, it depends WHAT you are doing each day. If you are installing/uninstalling lots of things or basically if there's a high data turnover then it will get fragmented quickly. If you just use it to play solitaire all day then it will get fragmented slowly.

Edit: also, MSConfig isn't the only place that programs to run on startup are set. A freeware program to show a more complete listing is called Autoruns and is available here. But if you have to ask what is needed then you shouldn't be using that program anyway.
