vlad_the_old
This had cropped up recently, so I have borrowed the answer to paste in here... I believe "for the win" most likely traces back to the game show "Hollywood Squares". For those of you that aren't familiar with the U.S. show, it's a game of tic-tac-toe with famous celebrities sitting behind the squares. To place either their X or their O on a particular square, they pick the celebrity behind that square. The host then asks the celebrity some sort of survey or trivia question, and the contestant can either choose to agree or disagree with the celebrity's answer. If the contestant responds correctly, they obtain the square. When a contestant chooses a square that will result in a tic-tac-toe, he or she will say, " for the win." The show was quite famous in its early years as the celebrities on the show at that time had plenty of zingers and goodies to say. Today, I believe it's all scripted. Thanks to 4be2jue for the sigs. There are 10 types of people in the world - those that understand binary and those that don't!
