I have windows XP with 512k RAM and like 3GhZ whatever (I'm not very techie). So anyway recently I've noticed RS is taking more space, my task manager says it's taking 95-99 percent of my CPU and around 180k memory, it makes it pretty laggy. The only other program I'm running is msn messenger and I switch back and forth quite often.

I think RS runs on a looping thing where it automatically takes up all the remaining cpu speed ;)

Yeah but when I just start RS it's normal, after switching a couple of times i start to feel the lag. After awhile it takes a minute just for it to load compared to about 10 seconds normally.

it's probably got threads still in the CPU time :-?

 

 

 

Not sure why.. but some other programs tend to do that, when they don't unload things properly from memory, threads are still using the cpu time they're allocated.

So is there anyway I can fix that?

Not really, unless you can dump everything using the cpu from memory (or you could just kill the runescape process... and restart it)

Turning off msn doesn't helpt a thing. It is because runescape is a java game. Windows isn't optimized for java (it doesn't even contain java anymore).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Because of this the java runtime environments on windows tend to run pretty crappy, no matter which java application you take, you'll always get this problem.

This I might back, depending on the distribution you use. All comes down to how well it handles whats in the memory, if it has a good trash collector (ie: ditches stuff from memory once it's stopped being used) then all should be good.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Java has this built in, but if you have threads still running (this would come from using 'back' to change worlds and such) it wont dump them.

After the scan is done, you will probably find a few minor hidden trojans that things like spybot and norton dont pick up.

 

 

 

These are causing your cpu to jump to about 100% usage.

 

 

 

That is what happened to me, and that is how I solved the problem.

As for the trojan thing, if your cpu is pulling close to 100% and the runescape process isn't responsible for it.. then you got another problem... specially if the culprit isn't listed...

If the mudclient would just be ripped again this would be better possible, but with a lot of work with packetsniffers it would be kinda doable, rofl, dunno how happy jagex would be with this though since it could be exploited in order to create bots, but you could also create your own runescape looks lol. And design it with any programming language you would like :P.

Yeah I scanned with housecall, adaware, spybot and AVG already. As for the threads in my CPU thing, I have the worlds menu bookmarked so that's how I switch, does that leave threads? Oh yeah, I don't think I'll be getting a new OS :?

Close down all your IE windows and load up again if it gets laggy, sounds like a memory leak in RS.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When running RS it uses about 60% of my AMD Athlon64 3500, and aboiut 70mb of memory. I get no probles after changing world, try installing Sun Java.

Suppose that i suspect i have a memory leak, it's program related isnt it? How could i accurately identify it and fix it. It's really annoying me. Rs gets laggy after 5 mins, switch worlds, still laggy. I close for 5-10 mins or open another program, go back to rs, fine! after 5-10 mins, laggy again.. Rs also runs at over 90% cpu sumtimes 100.
